Enter the 2006 FOCAL Award Writing Contest!

'

Gennifer Choldenko's book, Al Capone Does My Shirts, has won the 2006 FOCAL award.

It's a really great book that combines California historical information about Alcatraz, a little humor, and some hard-hitting commentary on the the care of children with disabilities in the early 20th century.

If you would like to read the book and enter the writing contest, go to your public library or ask about getting this from the school library. We have one copy.  You may also ask your teacher to read it to your class.

To download an entry form click here. Entries should be postmarked no later than October 27, 2006, and should be sent to the address on the form.

The luncheon is November 4, 2006,  If you win, you and a guest will attend the FOCAL Award Luncheon at McCormick & Schmick's across the street from the Central Library where you will meet the author and win a signed copy of the book.

Also check out the LAPL KidsPath page for recommended reading lists.  There are several excellent lists including the past list of the FOCAL Award winners, all books with a focus on California.
