A message from TOPANGA ELEMENTARY CHARTER SCHOOL
What’s Coming Up? Thur Feb 8 School Tour – 9:00 am in front of the office Fri Feb 9 Friday Morning Assembly – 8:00 am Sat Feb 10 Family Dance Night – 5-8 p.m. in the auditorium Traffic Duty for the Week: Ms. Welch’s Class Reminders/Updates: Thanks to all the parent volunteers who helped out for this, the first hike week of 2018. When we have more adults helping on the trails, the students can do even more exploring and investigating in smaller groups. February is Black History Month, and many of our classes are studying the lives and works of famous African Americans this month. I’m dusting off my stack of 78 rpm shellac records so I can present some classic jazz and blues sides for the Friday morning assembly – but today I was preempted by our own students performing a new style of music they call “rock and roll” (apparently an offshoot of R&B, or rhythm and Blues). If you liked what you heard this morning, take a look at the STAR afterschool enrichment offerings at our school. Spotlight on Health There’s lots of germs going around now, and a parent asked me to remind everyone that the District recommends that a child stay home for 24 hours after having a fever to reduce the chance of contagion. Also, we will call you at home if your child has a fever, but if a child has a stomachache or feels tired, we have them rest, use the bathroom, and try to get them back to the classroom. As usual, please share with the main office any specific heath concerns you may have about your child so we can better work with you to keep everyone here at school healthy. If your child is absent or late, you will receive a letter automatically generated by the school district. Even though my name is at the bottom of the letter, it was written by the school district – but we can clear up any misunderstanding here in the office if you stop by and ask. STAR Nova Session 3: January 29 – March 23, 2018 Session 3 has already begun, but there is still room in the following afterschool enrichment classes: Supernova: Eco Station Fact or Fiction – Animal Myths (Mondays, 4:00 – 5:00 pm) (the first hour from 3:00 – 4:00 pm is almost full). Rockstar: I Wanna Rock! (Tuesdays 2:00 – 3:00 pm Gr. 1&2, 3:00 – 4:00 pm Gr. 2-5). Literacy: Creative Writing – Dungeons & Dragons / Game of Thrones (Wednesdays 3:00 – 4:00 pm Gr.
