Thanks to our 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students, words were on parade Thursday - as expressed through costumes, homemade props and lots of clever thinking. If you missed our first Vocabulary Parade (which was held Thursday morning in the auditorium), you’ve probably heard all about it. It was a great morning of fun and learning, and we’re grateful to Ms. Welch, Mr. Harrell and the rest of third grade for leading the way. Excelsior!
Next week the District requests that we practice a “lock down” drill, and our safety committee has chosen Monday at 10:30 am for our practice. For about ten minutes, we will be locking all doors on campus, and teachers will keep our students safe and calm. Teachers will also be checking and taking inventory of their emergency supplies. We decided not to make this drill a surprise (as we do with fire drills) so you can help us explain to our youngest students that while there will be no real danger, we have to practice so we can be prepared for every situation.
Voyage to Outer Space: This Saturday at the Topanga Library 3:00 – 4:30 pm
The TEP sponsored Science Speaker Series continues this weekend with Dr. Bonnie J. Buratti, Senior Research Scientist and technical manager at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory who was recently named the NASA Project Scientist for the Rosetta mission to a comet. She is the author of over 200 scientific papers and book chapters, and a frequent public speaker and TV and radio guest. Dr. Buratti was awarded the NASA Exceptional Achievement Medal, and the International Astronomical Union recognized her work by naming asteroid 90502 Buratti after her. Her book “Worlds Fantastic, Worlds Familiar” was recently published. Dr. Buratti will dazzle us with a tour of our solar system in her talk, “Earths Above.”
Next Week: Back to the Trails
Now that the rains have somewhat subsided, we will be conducting our science lab sessions on the trails next week. Ms. Benor would like volunteers to help the kids plant new oak trees – and to make observations now that there’s lots of new growth on the trails. As always, the time and day of the science walk is the same time and day that classes usually visit the science lab – or if you’re unsure, you can check the list of upcoming events at the top of this email.
It’s Here: The Great American Spellcheck!
Today we kicked off of the Great American Spellcheck! This is a fundraiser that makes sure 100% of the money raised benefits our school and is rooted in academics.
Here’s how it works: Your child studies the grade specific spelling words and collects pledges from family and friends for every word that he or she spells correctly on The Great American SpellCheck test. Your child improves his or her spelling skills, and our school enjoys the financial benefits!
We ask that you:
Enjoy the weekend,
Mr. Steve Gediman, Principal
