Our 5th Graders dove headfirst into the Smarter Balanced test on Monday, and their reward was that they have finished the week and completed their test for the year. They also have the satisfaction of knowing they worked hard and tried their best. This is not an easy test, and I’m proud of the courageous way our girls and boys are facing this challenge.
Next week is our final week of state mandated testing –and this time it’s 3rd Grade’s turn. Parents can help by making sure your child gets plenty of rest, a good breakfast, and lots of encouragement. We don’t want anyone to be stressed or anxious about the test – but we do want everyone to try their best, which they can only do if they feel their best.
We’re excited about next week (the official “Teacher/Staff Appreciation Week,” when we honor the teachers and aides who work so hard with our students). Some folks thought this week was Appreciation Week, because on Monday the staff was flabbergasted to see a whole new Staff Lounge in place of the old Room 14! Like elves of yore, an amazing group of parents (I will try to get the list next week) worked all weekend to transform what was a dilapidated Staff Lounge into a serene, tasteful space that the staff will enjoy for years to come. This morning, the teachers handed out thank you cards to all the parents involved – it is very much appreciated.
Kindergarten and First Grade: Change in Dismissal
Our safety committee has many tasks, but the issues they keep returning to involve ways to make our school safer and secure for all of our students.
We appreciate all the parents who follow these important rules and always come to the office first before entering campus, and we are working hard to make it impossible to enter campus without going to the office first. We believe that one step we can take now (starting Monday), is to walk our students in Rooms 1, 2, 3 & 4 up to the quad area (where we have our Friday morning assemblies). This way, teachers can keep a better eye on their students and the parents who are picking them up.
We’ve had problems with students running up and down the hills and climbing trees right after dismissal in the lower garden area, and if the teachers take a few extra minutes to line up their class and walk them up the stairs to meet you in front of the office, we can be much more vigilant as we ensure every student is safely reunited with their parent or guardian. Thank you so much as we make this extra effort on behalf of our littlest students!
Vote on Tuesday, May 16th
On Tuesday May 16th an election will be held consisting of a ballot measure and runoffs in two City Council and two Los Angeles Unified School Board races. One of the School Board seats is for an area that includes Topanga Elementary.
I urge all parents to be informed voters, and to be sure to vote in order to get your voice heard. I also want to remind you that while many of us are quite passionate about our political views (and our country needs that passion), we cannot campaign on campus or use district or school resources to campaign for one particular candidate. If you have questions, feel free to call or stop by to talk.
