It was good to talk to everyone this morning about our shared anticipation over the coming week long Thanksgiving break. As I walked through classrooms this week, I saw that our students are thankful for the same things I’m thankful for – family and friends. Of course, this is a time when most of us reflect on the things we have and usually take for granted (food, clothing and shelter) – but the people we care about and who care for us are our greatest treasure.
We had a very productive leadership council meeting on Tuesday. Near the end of the meeting, one of our parent representatives asked how our students were dealing with the aftermath of the November 8th election. I shared some of the activities I had observed in classrooms (in one of our fifth grade classes each student wrote a letter to our newly elected president) which allowed students to express their feelings.
The consensus of the council was that in these uncertain times, our best message to our students is to remind them that Topanga Elementary Charter is a place where they are safe and protected. I shared this thought with our students this morning: What we do here at school is learn – but what we are is a safe and protected place where the adults care for all our students. I’m thankful to be a part of a school community where we truly do care and look out for each other. I hope everyone has a wonderful holiday break, full of fun, family and friends.
