New projects are in the works for Topanga Elementary! On Monday, I walked with Mike Glenn from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and several parents from our science committee through the campus, identifying places where native plants can thrive. Between Mr. Glenn, the Kizh Tribe and our highly motivated parents, long term plans are being made to enhance our existing gardens – as well as create new ones. Watch this space.
Deborah Stern’s Santa Monica Trails fund has enriched our science program in the past, and now she is very interested in funding much needed repairs for our outdoor amphitheater. She suggested alternative wood products (trex, nextwood...) which sounds great as they tend to last much longer, require lower maintenance, and can be made with recycled material.
She just needs three bids. If we have any parents who are (or know) interested contractors, especially someone interested in donating some of their time to keep the cost down, we can move forward quickly. We could even try to buy locally to make a win-win for the community. Please let me know if you are interested, or know someone who is.
And while we’re on the subject of locals . . . on Monday one of our very own Topanga Elementary parents – Lisa O’Connor - will take her seat in the Main Office as our new Office Technician! Thanks to Ms. O’Connor, Joanna Williams (our Office Manager) won’t be all alone in the office answering calls, greeting visitors, handing out ice packs, as well as the twelve other things she has to do all at the same time. Be sure to say “Hi” and “Thanks” to Ms. O’Connor as you pass through the office...
A Very Special Trashy Tuesday (A Message from Bridget Gardner)
We have a special event next week on Tuesday. We’re so lucky to have a guest speaker from Heal The Bay who is going to do an eco-presentation in the auditorium!
Here is the link to see the flyer.
Thanks everybody, I hope to see you there, it’s going to be awesome!!
Parent Workshop – Wednesday at 7:00 pm in Room 14 (Teachers’ Lounge)
Our new GATE coordinator, Ms. Tobisman and Alisa Land Hill, our GATE parent representative, have been working with me on our GATE (Gifted and Talented Education) plan, and as part of our outreach to interested parents we are holding a second parent workshop for the year – this time in the evening, for those who could not come to a morning meeting (although you are certainly welcome to come to both).
On Monday, Nov. 17 we held a morning workshop before school, so this time we will hold the meeting on Wednesday at 7:00 pm in Room 14 (the teachers’ lounge). We will cover many of the subjects we began discussing in November (GATE, differentiated instruction, Common Core standards), as well as answering questions and providing materials on any other instructional subject that might come up. Since the November meeting Ms. Tobisman has attended a GATE training, and on Tuesday a representative from the GATE office presented to our teaching staff – so we have more updates to share for any and all interested parents.
Here Comes the Play...
Auditions for the 2017 Topanga Elementary Musical will take place January 10-13. All students grades TK-5 are welcome to participate and every child who auditions gets a role. There will be a mandatory registration and information meeting next Friday, December 9th at 8:15 and again at 7pm (by reservation only).
Please email email@example.com with any questions or to RSVP for the 7pm meeting.
There are many volunteer positions still open, including Stage Manager and costume and scenic help. Please send us an email if you would like to join our production team.
The Magic of Winter
Don’t forget – not only will Friday, December 16th (the last day of school before winter break) be a minimum day, it will also be time for our holiday extravaganza “The Magic of Winter.” Our students will be presenting a program featuring some new numbers as well as some old favorites – and there will be two performances: 8:30 am and 11:00 am. But that’s not for two weeks – I’ll remind you again next week.
Have a Great Weekend,
Mr. Steve Gediman, Principal
