Traffic Duty for the Week: Ms. Handler’s Class
Frozen Treat Sales: Ms. Saporta’s Class
From the hot jazz of Louis Armstrong last week, we segued to the cool sounds of tenor giant Lester Young (“Prez”) and Billie Holiday (“Lady Day”) this morning as we reach the heart of Black History Month. We were also treated to presentations from Ms. Tapper’s class, and I announced that we will be concluding the month in a very special way – a live jazz concert on Leap Day! (Monday, February 29th). Thanks to Lori Precious for organizing the event, and Bonnie Graves for sponsoring the musicians – it should be a blast!
The kids seemed to really enjoy our annual Jump Rope for Heart event – and they raised a lot of money for a good cause. Thanks to all the parents (many!) who came to cheer, dispense water, and help to make the whole event run smoothly. Now we can all rest for three days...
The Kindergarten Yard
Several parents have let me know what they think of our new Kindergarten morning routine; some parents like the change, and others miss the old routine. To clarify a point I made in last week’s Friday Focus: the teachers have reported that having the kids play in the classroom from 8:00 – 8:15 a.m. is better for the kids, and not simply more convenient for the teachers. As every teacher will tell you – no matter the grade, kids are at their best as learners in the morning before recess. Our teachers have reported to me that their students are more focused and on task with this new schedule than before we made the change. The kindergarteners are getting a lot of time to play on the yard (recess, lunch and P.E.), and we will still supervise the yard from 7:30 a.m. – 8:00 a.m., so there is always the opportunity play on the yard during that time.
With more positives than negatives, we will continue our new Kindergarten morning routine – but we can certainly revisit the issue as we move forward this semester.
The Link Between Kids Who Walk or Bike to School and Concentration
Many of our Topanga families walk or bike to school because they know it’s good for their health and it’s good for our planet not to use cars. But did you know it’s also good for learning? I didn’t, until a parent shared this article with me (which I now share with you):
