Our Black History Month is going out with a bang – we were treated to a scene and a song from the 3rd grade about civil rights icon Rosa Parks, and I concluded my weekly Lessons in Jazz session by looking forward to our big Leap Day jazz concert on Monday, February 29 with Jessie Sharps and his band of Topanga Elementary alumni. It’s too bad the whole year can’t be February . . .
I enjoyed seeing our students’ art on display at the Topanga Art Gallery in Pine Tree Circle. If you haven’t been, you still have time – and next week the gallery owner is having a raffle for art lessons, and the money all goes to TEP. Even if you don’t plan on buying, be sure to visit – it’s great to see it all together in a real gallery.
Next week on Wednesday and Thursday our 2nd grade students will be taking the OLSAT 8 test, which will determine eligibility for the District’s GATE (Gifted and Talented Education) program. Our teachers have been preparing their students all year, and you can help by making sure that your child gets a good night’s rest before the test, has something to eat in the morning, and isn’t worried about the test. We want everyone to try their best – but it’s not like a normally graded test, so we don’t want your child to feel anxious or unsure about taking it. If you have other questions about the test, feel free to ask me or your child’s teacher.
To anticipate our enrollment for the next school year, we are asking our families to return a form asking if your child(ren) will be returning to Topanga Elementary in August. If you are not returning, we’d like to know why. Every bit of feedback we get from parents (both positive and negative) will help us to improve our school.
The Morgan Hill lawsuit – A Link to the Opt-Out Form
In April 2012, the Morgan Hill Concerned Parents Association and the Concerned Parent Association (Plaintiffs) filed a lawsuit against the California Department of Education (CDE). The Los Angeles Unified School District is not a party to this litigation. However, the Plaintiffs are subpoenaing student data from the CDE's student database.
Parents can object by printing out, completing, and mailing to the court the "Objection to Disclosure of Student Information and Records Case No. 2:11-CV-03471" form at the CDE's Web site at Objections to Disclosure of Student Records. By clicking on this link you can get information and print out a pdf form that must be sent via regular mail to the court. We can print out a copy of the form for you in the office, but we cannot accept or send the letter for you.
