Traffic Duty: Ms. Chatham's Class
It was good to see so many parents join us for our first Friday morning assembly. As a reminder to our new Kinder parents – on Fridays all the classes (including Kindergarten) gather in the quad area in front of the main office. In addition to important announcements, we also often have students speaking and/or performing, so if you can stay late on Friday, you are welcome to join us at the end of every week for our morning assembly.
Traffic was much as we’ve come to expect on the first week – but I certainly appreciate parent volunteers who help me to remind drivers to keep moving through our pick up and drop off circle. Patience is a virtue for those waiting in line for pick up or drop off, and always let children out using the door facing the sidewalk, not the street. I’ve also been told that folks are still parking on the bridge down at the bottom of the street, which can create a hazard as parents drive up and down our School Road.
In addition to car traffic, I'd like to gently remind parents that we should all respect the school dismissal time (2:40 pm on MWF, 1:35 pm on Tuesday and Thursday). I make sure our school gates stay locked until one minute before dismissal, but some parents who are coming into the parking lot before dismissal are walking onto campus and waiting by classrooms, which make it difficult for teachers to keep the attention of their class as they get them ready to go home.
This year we will be trying to close the big gate earlier in the morning so that we can secure our school. While we have allowed parking on the lower playground until 9:45 am, we cannot leave the gate open that late anymore. If you need to leave campus late and are still parked inside the gate, you can ask in the office and we’ll open it.
The price of everything is going up – and that includes lunch in our cafeteria. Student breakfast is still $2.25, but lunch is now $3.00. If your child didn’t have enough money this week, don’t worry – our cafeteria manager won’t let anyone go hungry, and we can settle the money part later.
The Opening Packet documents are due in one week – and the District just sent them to us today. Look for the booklet today (or Monday) in your child’s backpack.

Monday is Eclipse Day
This Monday the sun will be 62.2% eclipsed by the moon, and our science teacher Ms. Benor and our industrious science committee have put together a host of activities so that our upper grade students may safely observe this rare phenomena.
We will be watching the NASA live stream of the total eclipse on a big screen in the auditorium, but we have also secured a number of NASA approved glasses, filters and even a special solar telescope. Ms. Benor visited classes today to demonstrate what will be happening during the eclipse, and also to warn students that it is never safe to look directly at the sun without the proper equipment.
The school district has given principals a form to distribute that allows parents to give permission for their child to view the eclipse through approved glasses – but the parent must sign the consent form for this to take place. We have sent consent forms to students from Grades 2-5, but for Kindergarten or first grade students, parents must be present (and sign the form that is available in the office). The sun’s rays are not any more dangerous during an eclipse that any other day (it’s still the same sun) – but parents should make sure their child knows how to be safe by never looking directly at the sun.
Leadership Council at Topanga Elementary Charter
The Leadership Council is the decision making body at Topanga Elementary. As outlined in our charter, the council is composed of ten representatives: five teachers, three parents, one classified staff member and one administrator. The parent representatives are elected for a two year term, and this is the year we will elect three new parent representatives.
Interested? Contact me via email, phone – or just come by the office (but let me know by Friday, August 25th so I can put this together in time). Before Back to School Night, I will put a ballot together with all the candidates’ names, and I would like the candidates to also give me a short paragraph to go with their name on the ballot.
The voting will be here on campus. The election will be by secret ballot, with ballots distributed, one per family, at our Back-to-School Night in a manner to assure that each family that is entitled to vote will receive a ballot. Ballots will be counted by two Leadership Council members and me, and will be available for review until the next election.
If you want to be involved in Leadership but would rather not commit to being a parent representative, you can join a leadership committee. You don’t need to be voted in – just show up on Committee Meeting Tuesdays, which are always the week before Leadership Meeting Tuesdays. These dates can be found in the Opening Packet.
Back to School Movie Night – The Lego Batman Movie
The doors at 5:00 pm and the movie starts at 5:30 pm.
It's a great way to socialize with other Topanga Elementary families while enjoying a movie on the big screen in the school auditorium!
Hot dogs, grilled cheese, popcorn and other snacks will be available for purchase, and there’s lots of seating on the auditorium floor – so bring your own blankets and pillows.
Feel free to let the kids come in jammies to make the ride home extra easy.
Suggested donation: $5 dollars per person
