A big round of applause to all the families who attended, and the folks who helped me make announcements, at Tuesday’s Back to School Night. I enjoyed hearing the presentations in each of the classrooms, and I could feel the positive energy as we move past the first weeks of school and into September. This was also the week our enrichment schedule began, so our students are now getting to know our new science teacher (Ms. Benor) and P.E. coach (Coach Sean).
Today we had a glass water bottle break on the upper playground, so we had to quickly get the pieces cleaned up. I know that many prefer glass bottles to plastic for health reasons, but metal water bottles are also a great alternative to plastic – and they won’t shatter on the yard. Please do not send glassware to school with your child.
Leadership Council at Topanga Elementary Charter
Voting for the three parent representatives took place during Back to School Night. Unfortunately, two of our candidates had to withdraw due to other work and family commitments, so we ended up with three candidates for our three positions. This means all three are winners – but more importantly we are the winners because each parent has shown an interest in committing their valuable time to helping our school. For those of you who didn’t get a chance to see the ballot, here are the names of each new representative (in alphabetical order) along with the short biographical sketch I asked them to write. Congratulations and thanks to all three!
Mara Garcia - Hello Families, My name is Mara Garcia and I am a parent of a new kindergartner named Kainoa Garcia. I am interested in getting involved in our school's Leadership Council, as it seems like a way to gain a meaningful connection to the school community and share my professional experience in the field of education. I am currently an Upper School Counselor and Director of Human Development administrator at a local Independent School. I have eleven years’ experience working in schools and have worked directly with students in grades four-twelve. I have also taught parenting classes to parents of children age five-fourteen. Within my role as a school administrator, I have served on leadership committees such as financial aid, student support services, strategic planning, accreditation team (for the section on Social and Emotional Learning), diversity and admissions. As a new parent, I realize that I have a lot of learn about Topanga Elementary, and am excited to jump right in and start working with all members of the community. Thank you for your time.
Julianne Gorman - My name is Julianne Gorman and I'd like to be one of your Leadership Council Representatives. I hope you'll find that my experience & skills both on and off our campus can make a meaningful contribution to the guiding council overseeing our school's academic environment. I look forward to adding value to the programs already in place and working with the whole team to create new opportunities to build upon that foundation.
AT SCHOOL: I've been active within the school's thriving volunteer community for the past two years. I jumped right in the first year at TECS, serving as a room parent (2014-15) when my son Elias entered Kindergarten, and again as a TEP Board Member (2015-16). I've enjoyed volunteering many hours--and more than a few baked goods--while also working with and getting to know many parents & families school-wide. It has been incredibly rewarding to have an active role, along with my peers, to support the important programs that enrich our children's education.
AT WORK: I am a Marketing Director for STARZ Entertainment. Among other things, my marketing role there involves team building, long term strategy and connecting to the passionate audiences who love our programming. I've had extensive training in communication, project management and leadership through a "mini-MBA" program I completed at Daniels School of Business. These professional skills give me a perspective that I hope will enable me to be an effective member of the Council.
AT HOME: My husband, David (another serial volunteer), our son Elias (2nd grade -Mrs. Tobisman) and our baying hound dog, Tesla, enjoy living in 'climate perfect' Fernwood, surrounded by beautiful nature and some of the best friends a community could offer.
Amber Moreen - Amber Moreen served on the leadership council last year and wishes to continue on the council to, among other things, improve the communication between TEP and the leadership council. She has a doctorate in policy analysis and has worked as the Director of Education for a foundation, in leadership positions in local government, and for a think tank.
