ART TREK
Art Trek, Inc. is an independent, hands-on, not-for-profit arts program bringing quality visual, literary and performing arts into the community. It has been active since 1992 and was established as a not-for-profit in 2006. Their mission is to create a positive and confidence-building experience for individuals of all ages and socio-economic backgrounds: in classrooms, in public facilities, in their studio and wherever they can meet a need. They commit to extending themselves into high-risk programs, underserved and needy populations, senior programs, social service programs and to educators in professional training workshops. Through their staff and team of 500 volunteers, they currently reach over 35,000 students every year.
Our staff, public participants, volunteers and teachers focus not only on the technical aspects of the arts but also recognize how engagement can positively affect the lives of the participants. Art Trek workshops impart basic visual, literary and performing art skills, problem solving strategies, creative choices, goal setting/object completion, art history along, and of course... personal and social expression.
Topanga Elementary Charter School is a Docent Trained School. Art Trek's experienced core staff provides training for volunteer docents at monthly hands-on workshops at Topanga Elementary, where they discuss teaching philosophies, methods and strategies for different grade levels.
Before the parents become docents, they become students! Docents complete each lesson themselves creating opportunities for trouble-shooting, role-playing, and discussion. Upon completion of training, docents go into the classrooms and deliver sequential, hands-on art lessons with clear plans, tasks, and identified roles. The lessons are designed not only to impart rendering, painting, and sculpting skills, but also to build student confidence and community ties.
This program meets the Visual and Performing Arts Content Standards for California Public Schools.
