I’m glad that Crysty from the Topanga public library (right down the street) came to talk during our morning assembly today. With a three week vacation coming up soon, it’s good to remind our students that Topanga has a fabulous public library – and what better way to spend a vacation than by reading? I’ve got my reading list ready – make sure you won’t run out of interesting books to read as 2018 turns into 2019.
It’s also a good idea to practice your math skills over the break. A couple of months ago the people from Revolution Math spoke to some of our parents about their program, which has been used successfully at our partner schools in the Palisades. We are sending home a flyer that offers Topanga families a free trial of their program over the winter break – and they are donating to our school if enough families give it a try. We will have another meeting in January, and you can tell me what you think of it.
If you get a call from Joanna (our office manager) concerning your child’s absence, don’t worry – we’re just trying to clear as many absences as we can before the District calls you or sends you a letter. Be sure to always send a note to school after your child is absent – but sometimes those notes get misplaced, which is why we call.
Due to recent (and upcoming) dead tree removal on our trails, we will not be having outdoor science week (hikes) next week – but we hope to be up and running when we get back in January.
In anticipation of the annual Topanga Art Show, Matt Doolin and other parent volunteers will be creating art with our students on Wednesday. Each child will paint a 2 x 2 tile with a flower, and Matt will then fire these in his kiln and assemble them onto a beautiful table with a wrought iron base to raffle at the art show. Last time this was done it was a big success, so we’re looking forward to what our students will be creating this year. If you are interested in volunteering, email Matt Doolin at firstname.lastname@example.org.
The Magic of Winter
Don’t forget – not only will Friday, December 14th (the last day of school before winter break) be a minimum day (dismissal at 12:40 pm), it’s also time for our holiday extravaganza: “The Magic of Winter.” Our students will be presenting a musical program featuring some new numbers as well as some old favorites. There will be two performances: 8:30 am and 11:00 am. Since it takes time to lug the sound system up the hill, we’ll skip the Friday morning assembly next week – but I hope to see many of our families in the auditorium to enjoy “The Magic of Winter.”
See you Monday,
Mr. Steve Gediman, Principal
