News From the TECS Science Committee:
As of Wednesday 12/4/2019, the school science committee, in collaboration with Greener Empowerment Foundation of Topanga, has planted ~800 native pollinator support plants on our campus and around our community. This puts us half-way to the goal outlined in our school’s award from the Xerces Society for Conservation of Invertebrates. (Kudos to Alisa Land Hill and Hannah Wear for spearheading this effort on behalf of our school and community.)
In science-related news from the district – On Dec 3, the LAUSD School Board voted YES to approve the Renewable Energy Resolution, sponsored by the LA chapter of the Climate Reality Project. This resolution establishes commitment by LAUSD to transition to 100% clean, renewable energy over the next 20 years, with specific and aggressive goals for each of the next 10 and 20 years.

Topanga Talking Stick is opening its doors to the TECS community for release, connection, and healing around the disruptive events of the last two weeks. The leaders of this council are offering a healing conversation for the TECS community of parents, staff, neighbors, and friends to speak their hearts over the disruptive threats that were recently discovered on campus. Independent Study-Questions Answered:
We have families that are not comfortable sending their child to school and have elected to go on Independent Study. The school is working with families by waiving the standard two-week prior request window. Students who are on Independent Study will be allowed to participate in school activities such as the upcoming winter holiday performance and class parties. Parents must accompany their children at all times during regular school hours. It's also ok to participate in the forthcoming musical theatre auditions, please refer to the faqs from FOCUSfish.
Book Fair Complete:
Hopefully, your child was able to pick up some books to read in time for the winter break. Thank you to all of the parents who volunteered to set up and run the book fair. A special thank you to Stephanie Lackenby from TEP, who was the chairperson of the Book Fair this year and did a great job!
Raptor Day is a Wrap!
I will be able to post pictures on the new Parent Square Application, so be on the lookout. A special thank you to Kent and Alisa Hill from the Science Committee for their efforts to bring Raptor Day to the students of TECS. A truly memorable experience.
Native American Classroom Presentation Ms. Harlow’s 4th Grade
Last Friday, two tribal members of the Kizh Nation, later known as the Gabrielino Indians of Los Angeles, paid a visit to Ms. Harlow’s 4th-grade class. They shared their culture and artifacts. The class heard stories about the Kizh tribe’s past and deep connections to the land surrounding our school. They discussed the healing power of local plants and the many foods that their ancestors ate. Our guest speakers were impressed with how much about environmental topics our 4th graders already know! Our new friends will be back to share their cultural history, tribal knowledge, and message with more students soon. Thanks to TECS parent Nikki Hexum for arranging this memorable experience.
