As if the teacher’s strike and a four-day storm wasn’t enough to turn our school upside down, the District decided to relocate us for the last two days to Woodland Hills Elementary. I apologize for the conflicting messages – after our first day of relocation on Thursday I got the message that we would be open today (Friday) – but then early this morning the folks in charge decided that we had to relocate for a second day. I’m hoping that with the end of the storms, Topanga Boulevard will finally be cleared, and we can be on campus again beginning Tuesday.
Of course, I also hope for a swift resolution to the labor dispute between LAUSD and UTLA which will end the strike and bring all our teachers and students back to their classrooms. Topanga Elementary Charter will continue to stay open as a safe place for our students (unless we are relocated again) – but I’m ready to see our classrooms once again filled with students eager to learn – all under the direction of our dedicated teaching staff. Teachers belong to society’s most vital, yet underappreciated, profession – and keeping talented and hardworking teachers on the job, working with students, benefits all of us.
I miss our teachers, and I know they miss their students. Perhaps the long Martin Luther King Jr. Day weekend will inspire our leaders to redouble their efforts at the negotiating table and finally bring our teachers home.
