A message from TOPANGA ELEMENTARY CHARTER SCHOOL
What’s Coming Up?
Mon Feb 25 Parent Conference Week Begins – 1:35 pm dismissal all week
Tues Feb 26 Coffee with your Parent Reps - Topanga Living Cafe - 8:00am-9:15 am (a community, not a school, event)
Fri Mar 1 The Vocabulary Parade – 8:30 am in the auditorium (parents welcome) – 1:35 pm dismissal.
Traffic Duty for the Week: Ms. Galindo’s Class
It was good to see so many parents this morning standing in the cold for our final Black History Month presentation on Be Bop – the Music of the Future featuring Charlie “Bird” Parker). Our jazz heritage is scarcely found on the radio these days – and I’m glad so many parents agree that our young people need to be exposed to this vital musical form that constitutes our nation’s greatest gift to the world.
Thank you 5th grade parent for making yesterday’s Colonial Day such a success. Now I know the whole story behind the importance of indigo dye . . .
If you came to last year’s Vocabulary Parade, you won’t need too many words to know it’s probably going to be even more splendorific this year. And that’s not even a word. See you Friday morning at the parade (in the Auditorium)!
Please remind your child that we have a two lane path that is the safest way to get up to the upper yard. We’ve been reminding more students than usual that climbing up the side of the hill not only damages our beautiful murals and destroys our butterfly garden – it’s also a safety hazard. We don’t want any of our students to put themselves at risk like that, even after school.
Parent Conference Week
Next week we will be conducting our second parent conference week for this school year. Dismissal for every day will be at 1:35 pm (not just on Tuesday and Thursday as we usually have it) so teachers have time to schedule conferences with all their students’ parents. I encourage you to attend a conference with your child’s teacher this week even if you feel there is nothing you need to discuss with the teacher. Our Topanga teachers have worked closely with your child for over one hundred days, and meeting to discuss your child’s strengths and challenges is an important way to make sure there is a strong connection between home and school.
Kids Heart Challenge (formerly Jump Rope for Heart)
Thank you so much for your ongoing generosity – so far we’ve raised $3,342.50 for the American Heart Association! Last minute donations can still be made if you go to heart.org/KidsHeartChallenge.
In An Emergency...
Alisa Land Hill and Kent Hill, two of our busiest science committee parents, recently attended the last Topanga Emergency Management Task Force meeting on Jan 30th. Here are some highlights they shared with me:
