A message from TOPANGA ELEMENTARY CHARTER SCHOOL
What’s Coming Up?
Thurs March 7 Kinder Round-Up – 12:30 – 1:30 pm in Rm 1.
Fri March 8 Friday Morning Assembly – 8:00 am
Fri March 8 Parent Meeting – 2nd Grade OLSAT Test – (after the morning assembly)
Traffic Duty for the Week: Ms. Talan’s Class
Thanks to our 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students, words were on parade today - as expressed through costumes, homemade props and lots of clever thinking. For the third year Ms. Welch and the third grade led Topanga’s own Vocabulary Parade, and this year’s parade was simmering over with synonyms and not adverse to adjectives. It was a great morning of fun and learning, and we’re grateful to third grade for leading the way. Excelsior!
If your child is staying after school (Beyond the Bell, STAR or play practice) please be sure to pick them up from the upper yard. We can’t allow students to wait alone in front of the school after the office closes – children need to be supervised by an adult while they are still here on campus. Thank you for helping us keep our students safe, even after school.
2nd Grade OLSAT Test Parent Meeting
In two and a half weeks (March 20th) all our second graders will be participating in the OLSAT test. This test is given in second grade throughout LAUSD, and it gives students a chance to qualify for the GATE program (Gifted and Talented Education). While there is no way to study for this test, you can be prepared by knowing more about it. Next week our GATE coordinator Ms. Tobisman and I will be having a brief meeting for all interested parents right after the Friday morning assembly (around 8:20 am). We’ll announce the meeting and the room during next week’s assembly, and if you’d like to learn more about the 2nd Grade OLSAT test, I encourage you to attend.
March 6 Art Lunch - Owls!
Next week, Wednesday, March 6, VAPA will host Lunch Art Day. During lunchtime and recess, we will have art stations set up for our students who choose to make owl-themed collage, owl watercolor and letter yarn art banners out of recycled materials. The finished art pieces will be installed in the Canyon Sages’ new room at the TCC for their grand opening on March 17— this is a cross-generational community outreach art project. The community-made art will engage students of all ages. Since it is during lunchtime and recess, participation is optional.
A kind reminder to please be sure to send your child in art-making appropriate attire that day for school. **We will be using various paints and glue which can get on clothes.**
For any parents who would like to volunteer at the art stations during lunch on March 6, please contact Kristine Sloan at email@example.com
***In the event of rain, the lunch art day will be moved to Friday, March 8.
Tickets are Now on Sale for Mary Poppins!
Go to http://topangamarypoppins.brownpapertickets.com
Please note that it is reserved seating. You will be given the option select seats after you add the quantity to cart (we have heard that this might not work from a mobile phone).
Even if your child is not in Mary Poppins, you will still want to come and see the show - it will be supercalifragilistic! And we will have a feast of British food and drink, an incredible raffle and amazing flowers and jewelry on sale. Support our theatre arts by watching our superstars on stage, raising money for VAPA, and donations of raffle prizes are still being collected. Thank you!

Save the Date — Topanga Elementary’s Annual Spring Auction: Saturday, May 4 Location TBD
Parents! We’ve set a date for everyone’s favorite event and our largest fundraiser of the year, the Spring Auction! Please save the date!
Given the event’s early May date, it only made sense to go with a Cinco de Mayo theme 🇲🇽 — which will mean fantastic Mexican food, margaritas y cerveza, great music and more! Plus, an incredible variety of items to bid on in the silent auction and fun-filled live auction.
If you would like to be involved — we will need help with planning, setting up, hosting the event, bartending, etc. — or have anything you would be able to donate for the auction (i.e. artworks, concert tickets, vacation home stays, unique services, wine, etc.), please reach out: firstname.lastname@example.org
Watch for more information about venue, tickets, menu and more in the coming weeks!
