Traffic Duty for the Week: Ms. De La O’s Class
It was time this morning to honor many of our Science Fair participants with medals and applause – but we’re not over yet! Every student who participated in the Science Fair with be receiving their certificate and recognition next week at our Friday morning assembly. The Science Fair keeps getting better and better, and it’s good that we honor those who worked so hard on their exhibits for this year’s fair.
Flyers went home this week about Measure EE. While it is not our place to tell parents how to vote on June 4th when the measure is on the ballot, as an educator I feel the need to point out that the revenue from Measure EE could benefit LAUSD in many ways. Please read the brochure and find out for yourselves – and don’t forget to vote!
If you were in the “Cafetorium” at lunchtime on Thursday, you were in for quite a treat. Parent and jazz guitarist Pete Snell, along with local Jazz singer Stacie Bush, treated our students to a helping of jazz, blues and even a Beatles tune while they dined. My favorite question from students: “Will they be here every day?” If only . . . .
Just a reminder – all visitors on campus must come to the office first before visiting a classroom. In the office we will ask you to sign in, take a visitor sticker to wear (if you do not have a volunteer badge), and we may have to call the classroom before sending you to the room. Please be patient with our office staff as we take these steps to ensure that our campus is safe and secure.
Please remember that we share the Topanga School Road with several residents, and blocking their driveway in the afternoon during dismissal is not very neighborly. In case of emergency, we never want to block someone’s driveway, which would leave them trapped in case of a medical or other emergency. Please help us to be good neighbors with the folks who live on our block.
Leadership Council Update
We were excited to have so many parents attend our last leadership council meeting on Tuesday, April 23rd. Tessa Charnofsky from Supervisor Shelia Khule’s office spoke about the upcoming Topanga Emergency Fair (May 5th) and Drew Smith, battalion chief of the LA Country Fire Department gave us important tips regarding fire safety in our canyon.
There was also a discussion about Proposition 58, which is a state law that provides parents the right to request language acquisition programs. As with all LAUSD schools, Topanga Elementary provides a structured English immersion program to English learners (students for whom English is a second language), but the District also offers Dual Language Immersion programs for grades K-12. Per LAUSD policy, in regards to Proposition 58, our school is required to maintain a written record of all parent requests, either in writing or made verbally, which show an interest in a Dual Language Education Program. We have received some interest and have documented this in the office. You are welcome to add your name if you are interested. If a school has 30 or more requests from parents enrolled in the school or 20 or more requests from parents of students in the same grade level enrolled in the school requesting the same or substantially similar type of language acquisition program, then we would notify stakeholders in writing of the parent request for a language acquisition program. Next, we would host an informational meeting for parents and staff on Proposition 58 and program options. In addition, our Local District West staff and the Multilingual and Multicultural Education Department of LAUSD would conduct a feasibility study to determine if the requested Dual Language Education Program can be implemented. Please know that a parent whose pupil is enrolled in a school for attendance in the next school year may submit a request.
We will have more information about Proposition 58 at a Coffee with the Principal in May. If you have any other questions about this program, feel free to contact me in the office.
It’s Cool 2 Be Kind!
Next week, April 29th-May 3rd, Topanga Elementary will be having their first Kindness Week! Student Council has put together a week of fun and engaging activities where students can show or support ways to be kind. Each day will be a different activity.
We need parent help!
Student Council is asking for parent help on Tuesday, April 30th from 11:45-12:30 (lunch) to help facilitate the kindness wall. Also, on Wednesday, April 31st from 11:45-12:30 (lunch) to help with monitoring the chalk drawings students will do on the playground.
If you are able to help, please contact Mr. Gediman.
Please see the attached flyer for the full list of activities!

Only 8 days left until our biggest event of the year — the Cuatro de Mayo silent and live auction, dinner and party!
Get your tickets now!
While you’re there, check out the auction items. New stuff is being added daily — restaurants, summer camps or tutoring for your kids, art by local Topanga artists, vacation homes and much more!! There will be even more at the live event, including class art projects and baskets, and a Maui vacation!
To whet your appetite, here’s a menu preview for the event:
Cochinita Pibil taco: A specialty of the tropical Mexican region of Yucatan, cochinita pibil is reminiscent of similar cooking styles in Hawaii, China, Greece and the American south. A whole pig is long marinated in citrus juices and red achiote paste, then wrapped in banana leaves and buried in an underground oven to cook for a day. Served with pickled red onions and habañero salsa, it makes one of the world’s great tacos.

Topanga Elementary is proud to announce FOCUSfish as its newest member of the after-school vendor family, along with STAR and the orchestra program. FOCUSfish has been a LAUSD vendor for over 15 years. FOCUSfish will continue to uphold the integrity of the theatre legacy at TECS. It will run annually from January through Mid-March, as it always has, culminating in an off-campus musical theatre production. FOCUSfish is happy to have been a part of TEP for almost 10 years, and for helping to raise over $30,000 for future arts programming at TECS, like the Story Pirates.
