Traffic Duty for the Week: Ms. Tapper’s Class
We had a great Friday morning assembly where we took time to honor all the participants in our 5th annual Science Fair. There were also great presentations reminding parents and families about tomorrow’s auction event, and news about the Topanga Emergency/Safety Fair to be held at the TCC on Sunday. In the afternoon, our students got a firsthand experience of fire safety in a dramatic fashion – after coming out on the yard for our monthly drill, we got to see fire engines, try out the hoses, and thrill to the sight of a helicopter flying overhead and dropping water on our thirsty trees. It was pretty cool.
Next week we begin our state mandated testing (5th grade already had their science test). 4th grade will be testing all next week on language arts and math, and the week after that will be 3rd grade and 5th grade’s turn. Parents can help by making sure your child gets plenty of rest, a good breakfast, and lots of encouragement. We don’t want anyone to be stressed or anxious about the test – but we do want everyone to try their best, which they can only do if they feel their best.
We’re excited about the upcoming “Teacher/Staff Appreciation Week,” when we honor the teachers and aides who work so hard with our students. I’ve heard that our parents and the administration have some surprises in store for our favorite Topanga educators – but everyone will have to wait until next week to see what they’ve planned for this year . . .
Traffic is snarling more now than ever, and when folks don’t park correctly on our School Road (or even on the bridge) it makes it even worse. Please park correctly so our drop off and dismissal can be swift and safe.
The Auction is Tomorrow! - Important Cuatro de Mayo Event Information
We hope to see you tomorrow at the auction. There will be many additional items to bid on, including class baskets and class artworks, as well as vacations to Mexico, Mammoth and Maui. (the Three Ms!)
A few important points to keep in mind:
Parking is at Froggy's — in the lot, or on the street. There is no parking at the event.
Shuttles will be running every 5 or so minutes between the ranch and across the street from Froggy's.
You may Uber or Lyft to the ranch — the address is 1291 Will Geer Rd. BUT that is the address for the house; it's a large property, and the event is around the rear at the horse stables on Hillside Drive. There will be ample signage.
As it is a ranch, it is dusty and the ground is uneven. Please dress casual ranch chic and wear comfortable shoes.
The entire event is outdoors. There will be heating lamps, but it may get chilly when the sun sets. Bring a jacket or wrap.
Please feel free to reply to this email address should you have any questions. Still need tickets? Click here.
We will be conducting our annual Spell-a-Thon on Thursday, May 9th - Friday, May 10th. Your kids should have been given the information packet today, containing the list of spelling words for their class and a pledge sheet to help raise funds for our school. The Spell-a-Thon gives the kids a chance to participate in raising funds for their school so TEP can use those funds to help provide a class size reduction teacher, a science teacher, a physical education program, and art and performance programs, to name a few.
The student with the highest fundraising in the school will receive a one-year online subscription to Encyclopedia Britannica Kids AND a $200 gift certificate to Disneyland!
If you have any questions about the Spell-a-Thon fundraiser please feel free to contact Stephanie Lackenby at firstname.lastname@example.org

VAPA Update: Performing Arts at Topanga Elementary
A big thank you to all 93 of the parents who took the time to respond to the 2019 Theater Program Survey! We value your feedback and are thrilled to be part of a community with such involved parents, who are so passionate about the importance of the arts in education for our children. We are happy to see that the survey showed a good overall satisfaction rate for parents and children involved with Mary Poppins, Jr., and it was helpful to get constructive feedback and identify areas for improvement. It was also great to hear about areas where we can add additional performing arts opportunities at Topanga Elementary. View the survey results here: https://www.topangaelementary.org/survey-results.html
As you know, we have some exciting changes for the 2019-2020 school year. The spring musical will no longer be produced by a TEP committee; FocusFish will be producing the spring musical as a LAUSD-approved after-school vendor like the STAR program and the Children's Music Workshop. Stay tuned for an information session to be announced soon!
The VAPA committee is pleased to see that in addition to the continued enthusiasm for the spring musical, there is also demand for additional performing arts programs like the Variety Show, Story Pirates, and more, and we look forward to adding additional offerings next year. Please feel free to attend the next VAPA meeting on Monday May 6 at 6PM to learn more about our plans for next year.
Story Pirates is returning to TECS on Friday May 17, when they will be performing sketches based on the stories your kids wrote over spring break! And the 2nd Annual VAPA Variety Show will be held on Friday Oct 11 - tell your kids, so they can polish their acts over the summer break. We can't wait to see all of the awesomeness!
As always, if you have ideas about Visual and Performing Arts programs you would like to see at TECS, or creative projects you would like to facilitate, please let us know! Thank you!
