Traffic Duty for the Week: Ms. Welch’s Class
Thanks to all the students, parents and families that made this year’s Teacher/Staff Appreciation Week so special. This week the teachers and other staff got flowers, fruit, a superb lunch in the lower garden, heartfelt cards and (most importantly) words of gratitude and appreciation.
After the rain chased us up into the auditorium, the teachers were treated to many wonderful tributes and gifts of plants and artwork. It was a touching and emotional filled time, so I’m glad I had my Principal of the Day to help me with the announcements as I was too carried away with the spirit of kindness to keep track of them all. It was truly a drizzly morning to remember – thanks to the parents who worked so hard all week to make the magic happen.
Parking here at Topanga Elementary is always a challenge, which is why we allow parents to use the lower playground as a parking lot before and after school. This should also help us not park in front of our neighbors’ driveways on the School Road. The lower playground is a playground during school hours, but it should not be used as a playground when it is a parking lot (i.e. when cars are present). Let’s make sure we aren’t allowing children to play in the lower playground when cars are still moving – it’s just not worth the risk.
Next week on Tuesday is our final committee meeting for this school year, so all three committees will be wrapping up old business and planning agenda items for the next school year. Some of the guests representing agencies that keep Topanga safe (they attended our last leadership council meeting) will also be speaking to our safety committee about identifying and correcting potential hazards on our campus.
TEP: New Board Members Needed for Next Year
Interesting in serving on the TEP board for the next school year? Then come to the next meeting Tuesday night at 7:00 pm in Room 14.
Open House is Thursday
Open House is this Thursday, May 16th from 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm. In addition to giving you time to visit more than one classroom and see all the sights, we will also have tables for STAR, TEP, Topanga Emergency Management, and other information pertinent to our community. We will even have information on Measure EE, the parcel tax that will be on the ballot on June 4, which could bring extra money to our school district. I hope to see you Thursday for Open House!
Two Important Notes About the Yearbook
1. ORDER NOW
We are nearing the end of the year--and the end of the yearbook ordering cycle. If you want a yearbook for the 2018-19 school year, please visit https://www.topangaelementary.org/yearbook.html to place an order, or fill out an order form in the school office and leave a cash or check payment with Lisa O'Connor. NO ORDERS ACCEPTED AFTER MAY 15th!!!
2. SEND US YOUR PHOTOS
Yep, we need more PHOTOS!!! And we need them this weekend. This year, we want to make sure we have loads of great pictures--and that takes the whole village. We have photos for a lot of events, but are still looking for photos of the following:
Basically, we want hi-resolution, well-lit photos of school events where you can see the faces of the kids! Please email email@example.com and firstname.lastname@example.org with photos or for directions & a link to upload to our Dropbox folder.

For Your Information
Proposition 58 is a law that was passed in 2016 that gives parents the right to request a research-based instructional model that best suits the needs of their children. In accordance with state regulations, we are notifying all parents and school staff that Topanga Elementary Charter School has received 20 or more parent requests at one grade level, or 30 or more requests from parents of students enrolled school-wide for World Language Immersion Program—Spanish.
Based on Proposition 58 guidelines, a feasibility study will be conducted by the Local District and the Multilingual and Multicultural Education Department to determine whether the requested program can be implemented in the 2019 - 2020 school year.
Food Truck Friday for May will be Friday, May 17th! (not a school event)
