That’s not déjà vu you’re experiencing – we’re just having another long weekend. This coming Monday, September 14th, is an “unassigned day,” and all Los Angeles Unified Schools will be closed. All District schools will also have another “unassigned day” on Wednesday, September 23rd . Enjoy the long weekend and, if you celebrate, have a very happy new year.
Leadership Council: The Leadership Council is the governing body of Topanga Elementary as outlined in our charter. Our first meeting of the new school year will be held on Tuesday, September 15th at 1:45 pm in Room 8. Our members were elected last year to serve two year terms, but we may need new memebers, and the public is always welcome to come and observe as well as make comments. If you have the time and inclination, please join us on Tuesday.
Topanga Beach Cleanup – “Heal the Bay”:
Community service (along with science and the arts) is very important to our school, and in the past we have been involved with food drives and other causes to help our community. The mother of one of our fifth graders had a great idea to get our fifth graders (and the rest of the school) involved with cleaning up our local watershed. Here is her message:
This year the fifth grade class would like to adopt our neighborhood beach. To do this we need to commit to three cleanup dates throughout the school year. The first date is on September 19; we are piggybacking onto Coastal Cleanup Day.
All volunteers should be at Topanga Beach September 19 at 9 am. The cleanup goes from 9am-12pm. Heal The Bay provides trash bags, gloves, all the equipment, etc. as well as an expert to talk to the volunteers and give information. Carpooling is encouraged.
But, most importantly...
All volunteers--parents and children--need to come with a safety waiver. If you go to Heal the Bay.org under volunteer and Coastal Cleanup Day 2015, on the right side of the screen under quick links, you will find the Safety Waiver available in English and Spanish.
Coastal Cleanup Day is the first of three dates we have committed to - so Topanga Elementary Charter School can officially say that we have adopted the beach!
Mega Play Date at the TCC
If you’re not too tired after cleaning up the beach, some Topanga parents have organized a “mega play date” on the same day – Saturday, September 19th from 4-8 pm. This is not an event connected to our school, but many of our families may be there. You can bring food to grill and to share, and they are promising games, bouncy houses and fun.
Stay Cool and Enjoy the Long Weekend,
Mr. Steve Gediman, Principal
