Traffic Duty for the Week: Ms. De La O’s Class
Kudos to all for helping our school to markedly improve our attendance! This morning I gave out perfect attendance tags to most of our students – each class had an attendance rate for the month of August between 92% and over 99%.
Please note that after the “What’s Coming Up? part of the Friday Focus, you can see the classroom that has been assigned to help with traffic duty for the week (the entire year’s list is in your Opening Packet). I could really use the help, especially in the afternoon after dismissal. Thank you.
Beyond the Bell in Action
Topanga’s Elementary’s flag football team came in 1st place on Saturday where they played at Marina Del Rey Middle School! Coach Derek and the families involved would love to encourage more kids to participate - the semi-finals are coming up next Saturday, September 29th, also at Marina Del Rey Middle School. Go Topanga!
New Art Room at Topanga Elementary (A Message from VAPA)
Most of you have heard that we have a new art room. A team has been assembled to make a creative environment for our kids to explore art. Please take a look at our wish list and see if there is anything you would like to contribute. You can drop off your items at the front office.
Check your backpacks for pledge forms for the annual Coyote Run, a chance for all students to enjoy physical fitness while raising critical funds for physical education and all the other donation-funded enrichment programs at our school (arts, science, teacher's aides, etc.).
The Spring Play
Our local non-profit aerial arts and children's theater company, Focusfish, together with the volunteer production team that brought you The Lion King proudly announces their return and choice for the 2019 Topanga Elementary School Spring musical...
* Mary Poppins *
While there are many shows up for licensing, there are not many that provide the high number of roles needed to make the experience enjoyable for a cast of approximately 100 children.
Mary Poppins not only has countless characters that are near and dear to our hearts but also a whole soundtrack of musical dance numbers that are sure to entertain the masses with nostalgia and spoonfuls of sugar. There are a vast number of fun roles for both boys and girls.
We hope you join us (kids and parents) for another magical school production! Stay tuned for information about sign ups, free dance and character workshops, audition dates and more!

ANNOUNCING THE TOPANGA ELEMENTARY FALL VARIETY SHOW:
“CELESTIAL & TERRESTRIAL STARS!”
We are excited to announce plans for a truly stellar evening of fun, collaboration and creativity in a variety show highlighting our unique galaxy of Topanga Elementary school children in acts, ensembles and artistic collaborations! Dancers, stand-up comedians, singers, magicians, sketch comedians, musicians, ventriloquists, jugglers, balloon twisters… you name it! Along with a galactic gallery of our students’ visual artworks - paintings, drawings, pottery, lego sculptures etc etc… all brought together through our “Celestial & Terrestrial Stars” theme!
Evening of Friday 2nd November 2018 (Pls note this is an entirely separate event from the wonderful Spring Musical which is returning later in the school year).
The intention is for this to be a joyful, creative experience for all who want to take part - with zero pressure to be perfect!!! For kids (groups, duos, solos) interested in performing in the show, there will be an IN-PERSON SUBMISSIONS SESSION after school on Friday 5th October where kids will perform their act (1-2 minute maximum duration please) for the show organizers to help determine the show running order. There will be a couple of rehearsals in the run up to the show itself - dates TBC. For all of our visual artists (again submissions from groups, duos & solo artists are all welcomed), we will be gathering all physical artwork submissions one week before the show. PLEASE NOTE: ALL kids who want to take part in this show WILL be in the show. However, depending on level of interest, we may need to consolidate some acts.
** PARENT VOLUNTEERS - YOUR HELP IS NEEDED**
We’d love your help with concessions, staging, lighting, sound, ticketing etc. If you’d like to get involved, please email email@example.com with “FALL VARIETY SHOW VOLUNTEER SIGN-UP” in the title OR add your name/contacts on the sign-up sheet in the school office and we’ll be in touch shortly. Just 6 weeks til SHOWTIME!!
We can’t wait to see the crazy out-of-this-world ideas the kids come up with!
