This morning I thanked all the Topanga Elementary families that I saw on Saturday at Topanga Beach for Coastal Clean-Up Day. The folks from Heal-the-Bay told us that there were over 120 volunteers on the beach that morning cleaning up, and that we collected over 400 pounds of trash! I was proud that so many of our families care enough about our environment to make this effort, and I know our students will continue to pick up trash here at school – if we don’t, it goes right into the ocean!
Beyond the Bell in Action
Topanga’s first flag football team came in 2nd place on Saturday where they played at Marina Del Rey Middle School! Coach Derek and the families involved would love to encourage more kids to participate for next year.
Parking, Running and Eating
I know parking is a headache at our school, and it will remain so until the District builds that big underground parking structure I’ve been asking for . . . Having parents park in the morning and afterschool on our lower playground has given us more parking spaces, but I want parents to remember that it’s still a playground. Don’t park on the grass or on the rubber mats around the apparatus – our kids shouldn’t have to worry about tire tracks on the grass and oil spills on our brand new playground mats. Thank you for your cooperation.
Speaking of the playground . . . we want our students to be able to run and play on the yard during P.E. and recess, but they can’t do it if they are not wearing the proper footwear. Flip flops are fine for the beach, but our students need closed toe shoes to safely participate in outdoor activities. Also, please remind your child that we should not be sharing food at lunch and snack time – we know they mean well, but some students have allergies or other food restrictions, and we want to make sure these requirements are respected.
Get your Coyote Run Pledges in this Week!
Our kids did a great job running and getting everyone to pledge and now is the time to follow through! Return your pledge sheets to school with check/cash or pay online at topangaelementary.org Thank you for supporting our physical education program.
Attendance Matters: Topanga Elementary students are tops in the District in so many ways – but attendance is our Achilles’ Heel. We need to work even harder this year to raise our attendance rate – and that includes tardies and leaving school early. If you are getting your child out of school ten minutes early, it counts as a tardy just like coming to school ten minutes late (you just won’t get the automated phone call from the District). Three tardies or early outs is equal to one absence, and the District considers that serious if a student has more than seven absences in one year. As much as possible, please try to take advantage of our many holidays and unassigned days (like yesterday).
