Traffic Duty for the Week: Ms. Welch’s Class
This morning we honored our students who had perfect attendance for the month of September. There were at least 10 students in every classroom who hadn’t missed a single day of school, and they were given a special attendance tag for September. I hear the October tags are even cooler... perhaps your son or daughter will get one soon!
October is National Bullying Prevention Month, and this morning I talked about avoiding hurtful speech. Teasing or name calling might seem like fun at first, but the fun ends when one understands that someone else’s feelings have been hurt. Let’s work together to ensure that Topanga Elementary is a safe place to work and play by remembering to respect each other’s feelings.
There is school on Monday. I realized that many parents were confused about this coming Monday because some other school districts are closed on Monday for Columbus Day. Our school district, however, has not observed Columbus Day for many years.
The New Progress Report Card
We had our first parent workshop of the school year today on the subject of the new progress report card. This new report card is being used for the first time throughout the district, and some of you have already seen some of the new language which we adapted for the mid-semester report that some students received. If you’d like to see a sample of the new progress report, as well as view other resources, go to http://tinyurl.com/NewReportCard.
Dogs on Campus
Unless your dog is a service animal, please do not bring your pet on campus – even before or after school. Most children love dogs and are eager to pet them, but even the best dog can act unpredictably if crowded or scared – plus some kids are afraid or allergic of dogs. Thank you for understanding.
P22 Day is Coming to Topanga Elementary
It's that time of year again for your favorite "cat" to visit Topanga Elementary for the second annual "P-22 and Urban Wildlife Week"! Beth Pratt, California’s director of The National Wildlife Federation, will retrace P-22’s trek over 5 days starting October 18 at Liberty Canyon and ending on the 22nd at Griffith Park. The walk will physically and virtually trace the likely path that P-22, LA's very own superstar mountain lion, took in leaving his birth place in the Santa Monica Mountains to reach his current home in Griffith Park. Given that our school is now a Certified Schoolyard Habitat, our visit will be somewhat of a homecoming for Beth! Please join us on October 19th from 4:00pm-6:30pm to welcome Beth back to our campus! The community IS invited to this special event so PLEASE invite your neighbors! Stay tuned for more information next week!
See you then!
Science Speaker Series
This month, Library Manager Oleg Kagan will interview Google Developer Yaron Zanki about his career as programmer, interest in computer science, and what it’s like to work for one of the world’s premier tech companies. Presented by the Topanga Enrichment Programs (TEP). Sat, October 7, 2017 3:00 PM - 4:30 PM
