Traffic Duty for the Week: Ms. Harlow’s Class
A parent asked me to mention to everyone that if one drives all the way up to the big circle in front of the school, turning around is a breeze. Unfortunately, some impatient parents are turning around in the middle of the street, causing traffic disruptions and potentially endangering our students. Big fire trucks pull off of Topanga Boulevard all the time so they can turn around in our cul-de-sac, and you should too.
Attendance is up – Topanga rises to the challenge! We’ve been making improved attendance a priority this year (as it is with the entire District), and our students were rewarded this morning with their newly-minted Perfect Attendance Tags for September. We’ve got a pretty cool (and maybe spooky) tag coming up for October, so hang in there and come to school every day! Collect the whole set!
Science Hikes are coming up this week – but we hadn’t planned on sending five teachers to an important Eureka Math training this same week when we mapped out the hike schedule – so note that some hikes may be rescheduled. Your child’s teacher may be informing you of the plans soon
Topanga Talking Stick
You are invited to sit in on our monthly council at Topanga Library. This is an offering for parents, teachers, school staff and neighborhood friends to pass the talking piece and share from the heart. This month's theme is: What is Community? Tuesday's co-facilitators are local resident Shawn Berry, Founder of First Nature and Andrea Shreeman, Parent Leadership Rep. Tea and Arrival 5:00pm - Council begins promptly at 5:30pm. RSVP and more info at http://www.TopangaTalkingStick.com
Science Committee Update
During last Tuesday’s leadership council meeting, the science committee was very pleased to announce that they have secured a donation for our school from the Arnold and Mabel Beckman Foundation in the amount of $10,000.
"The Beckman Foundation is a philanthropic organization based in Irvine California. They are dedicated to supporting scientific research, development, and education. The foundation was impressed with our school’s effort to support students’ natural curiosity and to impart in them a sense of environmental stewardship. We are honored to receive this support and recognition from the Beckman Foundation, which is known internationally as a tireless supporter of young scientists and scientific innovation.
We’d also like to emphasize this award as an example of how our school can receive recognition (and support) beyond our local community for our efforts with children; and to illustrate what we can do as a team when we all work together to define our goals, build on our strengths and keep the kids front and center."
Thank you Kent and Alisa Hill, and all the other hard working members of the science committee!
The Halloween Carnival!
Save the date and start planning your costumes for Topanga Elementary School's Halloween Carnival, this year being held again on the grounds of the Topanga Community Center. Class sponsored carnival games, face painting, gourmet foods, dance party and live music! It's a community event not to be missed! All are welcome!! Saturday October 20th 3:30 to 8:00
TOPANGA ELEMENTARY FALL VARIETY SHOW & ART WALK
DATE: FRIDAY 2ND NOVEMBER
We have 26 fantastic acts all set for a wonderful, jam-packed show FULL of variety - it’s going to be a really fun night!
Tickets will be going on sale soon! Rehearsals will be taking place after school Monday 29th Oct and Thursday 1st Nov. We will be in touch with all performers’ parents direct next week to advise on rehearsal timings.
In addition to the performance in the auditorium, we will be showing off Topanga Elementary students from all grades' beautiful visual artworks - paintings, drawings, pottery, Lego sculptures etc. in a specially curated 'art walk' from the playground up to the auditorium - beginning with a brand new section of the Topanga Elementary playground mosaic made in collaboration with last week's fantastic science committee project. We would LOVE every child to contribute something to the show and be part of something positive and fun that will also raise funds for TEP.
Artwork submissions on the theme of “Celestial and Terrestrial Stars" are encouraged! We will be gathering all students’ art soon DEADLINE 26 OCTOBER. Projects can be made at school or home. We will be encouraging the audience to bring flashlights to view the art - so glitters, glow in the dark and fluoro media are encouraged!! Submissions from groups, duos & solo artists are also welcome.
** PARENT VOLUNTEERS - YOUR HELP IS NEEDED**
We still need help with concessions AND lighting as well as general wranglers for the show. Please register here if you can help!
