A message from TOPANGA ELEMENTARY CHARTER SCHOOL
What’s Coming Up?
Sat Oct 20 Halloween Carnival at the TCC – 3:30 pm – 8:30 pm
Fri Oct 26 Morning Assembly – 8:00 am
Fri Oct 26 Raptor Day!
Fri Nov 2 Fall Variety Show
Traffic Duty for the Week: Ms. Kort’s Class
If you missed our Friday morning assembly, you missed my invitation to browse our fall collection of fine outerwear – also known as the Lost and Found. I’m running out of hangers, and it will all be donated at our next holiday break (either Thanksgiving or winter break), so come by and take a look.
The Great California Shake Out 2018
On Thursday we all participated in the Great California Shake Out drill, putting our students and staff through a full scale simulation including search and rescue teams going through the campus until all were accounted for. Hopefully, our families take this time to make sure you have emergency supplies at home (food, water, flashlights and a first aid kit), and a plan for what to do in case of earthquake or fire.
The Cul-de-Sac is not a Crosswalk!
At this morning’s assembly I related a story told to me the other day by a mom of one of our students who was involved in a minor collision (no one was hurt, thank goodness) because someone in line had to stop short so as not to hit a pedestrian walking across the street to the other side. When this mom pointed out to the pedestrian what had happened, he replied that he thought the cul-de-sac was a crosswalk. It isn’t! We have a perfectly good sidewalk that goes all around to across the street. It may take a few more seconds than darting into traffic – but our children are watching, and we need to set a safe example for them at all times. Thanks for using the sidewalk!
Topanga Elementary Science Committee and School Staff present:
RAPTOR DAY on October 26th
A series of live interactive animal shows featuring multiple types of raptors and reptiles presented by Raptor Events. Animals will include a falcon, hawk, buzzard, owl, king and milk snakes, red tail and sand boas, lizards and tortoises. We will learn about the animals' biology, evolutionary adaptations, and behaviors. Parents are welcome to volunteer to assist in chaperoning the children while enjoying the show. Contact Alisa Land Hill at email@example.com or a member of the science committee for details. Here is the schedule:
8:30-9:05 am - Winikoff, De La O, and Harlow
9:15-9:50 am - Chatham, Santora, Welch
10:35-11:10 am - Talan, Kort, Galindo, Tapper
12:40-1:15 pm - Tobisman, Harrell, Weisberg
Kudos to Topanga for improved attendance this year – but we still have a long way to go. While I continue to encourage families to go on trips during one of our many vacation weeks (we get one week off for Thanksgiving and three whole weeks in winter), sometimes work or family concerns necessitate a trip during instructional time. One way to make sure your child can keep up with their studies AND to help our school’s attendance rate is to apply for an independent study.
Independent studies must be requested at least two weeks in advance of the absence in order to give the teacher time to prepare materials. The absence must be for at least five days, and if all the work is not completed and handed in after the trip, only partial credit is given. If you apply, please take this obligation as seriously as you would any important contract. Thanks!
