A Note From the Principal
We had a great week and I have just a few notes for you.
5 Minutes Count!
Try to leave home 5 minutes earlier each day. Your child will gain 5 extra minutes of socializing each day (or 30 minutes a week) and you will too! Please minimize your stress, avoid tardy notes, and join us for morning pledge.
Independent Study – For a student to be enrolled in Independent Study the paperwork must be returned to the office BEFORE the student leaves. This is stated on the Independent Study forms:
Fridays are Spirit Days! Be sure to wear your Topanga Elementary Shirts or pick up a Topanga Elementary sweat shirt from the Spirit Shack!!
Parents. The deadline for submission for Friday Focus will be the day before (Thursday), before noon. All submissions received after noon will appear the following week.
If you have something you would like to discuss with leadership please send an email with what it is regarding and I will try to put you on the schedule.
If you would like to contact me the best ways are to leave a message with the office, or email Topangafirstname.lastname@example.org, I do not check my email regularly and this address is checked multiple times a day.
Have a great weekend!
Elizabeth Abramowitz, Interim Principal

Mars Rover Naming Contest
NASA is holding a competition for all K-12 students in the United States. The challenge is to name NASA’s next Mars rover. Submit your rover name and a short essay (maximum 150 words) to explain the reasons for your selected name. Be sure to review the RULES for all challenge details and entry requirements, including the privacy requirement of NO PERSONAL NAMES in your submission so that your entry may be posted in the public gallery. The Mars 2020 rover will seek signs of past microbial life, collect surface samples as the first leg of a potential Mars Sample Return campaign, and test technologies to produce oxygen from the Martian atmosphere to prepare for future human missions.

Los Angeles Fire Department CERT Unit Public Training
IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO TAKE A CERT CLASS FOR EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS HERE IN TOPANGA, PLEASE SIGN UP! WE NEED 25 NAMES TO QUALIFY. WE WILL ANNOUNCE DATE, TIME AND LOCATION AS SOON AS WE GET OUR INFO BACK FROM CERT. THANK YOU!
We are asking the room parents of each room to be that classroom's safety rep for sharing information on safety.
Parent Communications network (phone/radio tree) - We, on the safety committee, are looking for one or more parents in each zone of Topanga to assist as a communications delegate for families living for his or her zone. Ideally, these are parents with strong home comms systems (copper phone line, or generators/back up power systems) who live (and ideally work) in the canyon or valley who can help families in their region stay informed during an actual emergency. Please have those parents email myself or Amy Ruskin directly if they are interested. Alisajlandhill@gmail.com
URGENT REQUEST: Halloween Carnival Signs
TEP is looking for the MISSING wood Halloween Carnival signs. Only 2 were in our bin, and that leaves 10 more that are supposed to go up this weekend.
Please contact David Refsland at email@example.com. ASAP if they are in your garage or whatnot, so that Melissa Flynn, who has graciously offered to paint the updated info on them, can do so in time to hang this weekend. THANK YOU!
A Message from TEP (TOPANGA ENRICHMENT PROGRAMS):

A MESSAGE FROM TOPANGA ENRICHMENT PROGRAMS (TEP) BOARD:
We offer a heartfelt THANK YOU to all of those who have stepped up and chipped in! Donations are not mandatory, but are also not something we can do without. It costs an average of $1,200 per child to cover all the amazing programs we have, so that is our ask. We recognize that everyone’s situation is different—so if the recommended amount won’t work for your family, please give what is meaningful to you. If you have questions about the programs themselves, please reach out to the Leadership Council who governs the enrichment programs at our school: TECSParentReps@gmail.com.
We have approximately $84,146 in deposited Enrichment Fund Donations, Directory Sponsorship Payments, Pizza/Frozen Treat Passes and Variety Show tickets thru 9/26/19, with more pouring in each day! That's 28% of our goal of $302,605 for the year. If you haven't had a chance to give, please click below, or drop of your check or cash donation in the office--be sure to note your child(ren)'s name/Teacher on the method of payment--and ask them to put it in the TEP safe. https://www.topangaelementary.org/donate.html
The TEP Board is a group of elected members who are all PARENT VOLUNTEERS. We love throwing the parties, cooking up fundraisers and creating memories for our kids—all while supporting the school & the education of our children. Interested in joining in? Contact Julianne Gorman at email@example.com.
