Traffic Duty for the Week: Ms. Chatham’s Class
It was one week ago that Topanga Elementary Charter was closed due to road closures caused by the horrific fires in Malibu and other surrounding areas.
This morning I heard the good news that the roads have reopened and that residents are being let back into Topanga. I have been in contact with the maintenance and operations part of the District, and they will be sending a crew on Monday to our school to help our custodians to inspect and clean our school. While I expect that we will be up and running as usual on Monday, November 26th when all the other schools start up again, I will send out another update next week to confirm that the school is ready to open.
While we missed out on our science hikes this week and won’t be able to reschedule them, I will be working with our teachers to reschedule everything else we missed during the week we were closed, including parent conferences and class projects. Since I do not think that the school district will be adding extra days to the school year, our teachers will be planning at each grade level on how to best adjust their pacing plans to make up for the five missed days of instruction.
I’ve been working with Ms. Achen, our school psychologist, on planning activities for when we get back to help our students cope with the stress our families have been going through. Some parents and teachers have already suggested that we have “Thank You” projects to allow our students to thank the fire fighters and others who worked hard to protect lives and property during this difficult time. Ms. Achen sent me a good paper from the National Association of School Psychologists entitled “Helping Children After a Wildfire: Tips for Parents and Teachers” which I’m attaching to this email.
We are very fortunate to be part of a community that cares for each other and takes care of each other. As we mourn the loss of life and turn away from the chaos that these fires have caused, this Thanksgiving we have more reason than ever to be grateful for the health and safety of family and friends. I wish all of you a very happy Thanksgiving holiday, and I look forward to getting back to normal when I see you all again at school.
I saw many of our students in their cars wearing their pajamas last week on the day we closed, and I know many were disappointed to miss Pajama Day. Therefore, even though the Book Fair is over, Pajamarama lives on for Friday, November 30th. Let’s stretch our legs and get comfortable!
Happy Thanksgiving - see you in a week,
Mr. Steve Gediman, Principal
