Our thoughts go out to those of you who have loved ones in areas affected by the terrible fires we’ve experienced this week. We hope all our Topanga families are safe and sound, and ready to come back to school on Monday. The school district is reaching out to families in need – please feel free to contact the school on Monday if you are aware of a family (or even your own) that needs assistance.
A Message from Local District Superintendent Hildreth
This is Local District Superintendent Hildreth with an important message for our students, families and employees. I am happy to tell you that the schools in our Local District that were closed this week because of the wildfires will reopen on Monday, December 11. This decision is based on improved air quality and the lifting of mandatory evacuations that impacted our school communities.
The safety of our students and employees is always our top priority. District crews will be working this weekend to install new air filters at the closed schools and ensure that facilities are ready for teaching and learning to resume. However, we may continue to limit outdoor activities until air quality returns to normal levels. Please visit lausd.net for updated information and on-going resources for our students and families.
We realize that this has been a trying time for our families and employees. We are very grateful for your cooperation and understanding and look forward to seeing you back at school again on Monday.
Although school is closed today, this is still the first day of Read-o-Rama!
Please check student backpacks or print the attachment for your child's personal Read-o-Rama reading log and pledge sheet. Download Pledge Sheet
Starting today (Friday, December 8), all Topanga Elementary students are challenged to:
Please help us make this event a great success that encourages reading AND raises funds for our enrichment programs. A few details:
(If any students miss distribution of the reading log and pledge sheet due to the school closure, and get a late start next week as a result, no problem. They’ll be welcome to make up those missed days at the end as needed.)
Please direct any questions to email@example.com - Thank you for your support!
GATE Parent Workshop – Wednesday 12/13 at 8:00 am in Room 8
On Wednesday, December 13th Ms. Tobisman, our GATE coordinator, and I will hold a morning workshop in Room 8. We will cover many of the aspects of the GATE (Gifted and Talented Education) program as it applies to our school and the district, as well as answering questions that have come up regarding testing, the high achievement versus intellectual ability categories and the 2nd grade OLSAT test.
Lion King Jr. Updates
Auditions for “The Lion King” will take place Monday-Wednesday this week after school in the auditorium. Please register in advance at https://topangaelementarytheaterarts.shutterfly.com
Also...the FREE CAPOEIRA WORKSHOP ...brought to you by FOCUSfish has been rescheduled to this Friday, December 15th. It is a wonderful kickoff to “The Lion King” experience and is open to all students at TES. Spread the word.
The Magic of Winter
Don’t forget – not only will Friday, December 15th (the last day of school before winter break) be a minimum day, it will also be time for our holiday extravaganza “The Magic of Winter.” Our students will be presenting a program featuring some new numbers as well as some old favorites – and there will be two performances: 8:30 am and 11:00 am. While siblings (brothers and sisters) of our students are welcome to attend these performances, please remember that District policy does not allow siblings to visit classrooms during school hours - even for holiday parties.
Stay safe and see you Monday,
Mr. Steve Gediman, Principal
