This morning we caught up with some unfinished business – not all the winners of the bike slogan contest were at school last week, so this morning we were able to honor Sophie Sexton, Aliya Mata and Cyrus Farasat for their great work. Their slogans will be displayed at the Santa Monica Mountains Cyclery in Woodland Hills – along with Milla Romano’s (the winner of the bicycle) work. Thanks to Ms. Weisberg for organizing the contest, and thanks to Dave from Santa Monica Mountains Cyclery for their generous donation for our students.
Not only that, but we also heard Ms. Saporta’s students as they shared their posters commemorating famous African Americans, and I gave our students a taste of authentic be-bop courtesy of Bird and Diz (Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie). It was a happening.
Our very active students raised $6,500 for the American Heart Association during our Jump Rope for Heart event last week. If you haven’t handed in your donation envelope yet, please send it as soon as possible. Prizes will be arriving 6-8 weeks from now.
Topanga Elementary Charter school excels in almost every way – except attendance. Our numbers of chronically absent students is going up, not down – and we need to reverse this trend. For the month of January we will be awarding Perfect Attendance tags to students who were present every day in January, and then for every month until the end of school. With spring break only about a month away, let’s try to do our vacationing during one of the many days off on our calendar. If you have other questions about attendance, feel free to ask in the office.
Do you have questions about the GATE (Gifted and Talented Education) program at our school? Then come to an informal meeting in Room 8 on Wednesday morning at 7:30. Ms. Saporta and I will be presenting information about the upcoming test for 2nd graders and differentiated instruction strategies for home and school.
Many of our teachers have good communication with their students’ parents – including sending emails. However, if you send an email to your child’s teacher during the school day, don’t expect the teacher to read and respond during instructional time. We want our teachers working with students during the school day, not answering emails. Give the teacher at least 24 hours to find time in the afternoon or before school to answer your email (I do the same thing – I get to most of my emails either early in the morning before school or late in the afternoon after dismissal).
The Art Show
TEP’s annual art show is next week. Last year was my first experience with the art gallery showing, and I was overwhelmed by the talent on display at our own little Topanga Art Gallery at Pine Tree Circle. I still treasure the second grade art project that I purchased to hang in my office.
This year the opening reception is on Thursday, February 25th, from 3-6 p.m. The art will be on display until Saturday evening, and parent purchases must be made by 6:00 p.m. Friday. See you there!
Shrek is Coming!
After hearing a large selection of cast members singing this morning, I know many of you are eager to buy your tickets to the play. The link to order tickets is coming – stay tuned and we’ll let you know how you can reserve seats for what will undoubtedly be a spectacular production.
Have a great weekend,
Mr. Steve Gediman, Principal
