Parent Conference Week is a good time to meet with your child’s teacher to go over the second report card grades and any other questions or concerns you might have. It’s a good time for families to praise their children for all they’ve accomplished, as well as looking forward to the challenges of improvement for the next report card.
From the Desk of Ms. Williams, our Office Manager
Hello Parents! In case you haven’t noticed, we here at Topanga have started focusing more on attendance.
1. We have a new enrollment/attendance sign to make all parents and students aware of our daily attendance, numbers and percentage (while we will always strive for 100% attendance, the District has set a more realistic expectation of 96% attendance – which means not missing more than one day for every 25 school days.)
2. We have brought back our attendance tags; these go to the students who had perfect attendance for the preceding month. We have also started giving a special tag for the class that has the best attendance for the month.
3. We will also be announcing the class who has the best weekly attendance at the Friday assemblies.
Here are some attendance facts that all students and parents should know:
1. Leaving school early counts as a tardy.
2. Three tardies (or leaving early) equals one absence.
Good attendance is so important for a number of reasons. Here at Topanga Elementary we teach “the three Rs” (reading, writing, and ‘rithmetic), but we also try to teach life skills. Arriving at a job, on-time is an important skill, whether one works in an office or in the home. If students learn this now, it will make it much easier when they go on to middle and high school where students can’t advance to the next grade level with poor attendance. Think of it this way: would you still have your job if you showed up only 82% of the time? Just a thought.
