It was good to see so many parents join us for our first Friday morning assembly. As a reminder to our new Kinder parents – on Fridays at 8:00 am all the classes (including Kindergarten) gather in the quad area in front of the main office. In addition to important announcements, we also often have students speaking and/or performing, so if you can stay late on Friday, you are welcome to join us at the end of every week for our morning assembly.
Representatives from TEP, VAPA and the Science Committee spoke during this inaugural assembly of the new school year. Whether you are interested in fund raising, science or the arts – we have a place for you to channel your creative energies.
Traffic was much as we’ve come to expect on the first week – but I certainly appreciate parent volunteers who help me to remind drivers to keep moving through our pick up and drop off circle. Patience is a virtue for those waiting in line for pick up or drop off, and always let children out using the door facing the sidewalk, not the street. Several times the traffic leaving our school has been stalled because the traffic light sensor doesn’t know people are waiting. I’ve been told that moving slightly forward (or even pushing the crossing button) might speed up the process, but I’m not sure.
I’ve also been told that folks are still parking on the bridge down at the bottom of the street, which can create a hazard as parents drive up and down our School Road. An even bigger hazard occurs when someone in a hurry decides that two lanes of traffic (one going up and one going down) isn’t enough, and they speed around trying to create their own (third) lane. The risk of injuring one of our students (or another parent or family member) certainly outweighs the benefit of saving a minute or two, so SLOW DOWN for the sake of our children!
We close the big gate early in the morning so that we can secure our school. While we have allowed parking on the lower playground until 9:45 am, we cannot leave the gate open that late anymore. If you need to leave campus late and are still parked inside the gate, you can ask in the office and we’ll open it.
Want to add money to your child’s cafeteria account without the hassle of handing cash to Tammy (our cafeteria manager)? Use LAUSD’s “My Payments Plus” at https://www.mypaymentsplus.com/default.aspx
A Message from VAPA (Visual and Performing Arts):
Join us on Tuesday, August 27 from 6:30 – 8:30 pm in Room 14 (the teachers’ lounge) for our kick off meeting. Learn more about opportunities to get involved, sign up to either lead or assist on events or give feedback on how to organize the VAPA committee.
Our first VAPA event is the Variety Show. Submission sessions in the school auditorium on Monday, September 9th from 3-6PM. Save the date! Everyone who submits an act will be in the show! There are plenty of opportunities to help on that day and with the entire Variety Show as it is the largest VAPA sponsored event of the year. To find out more and get to know each other, please join us at our first meeting on 8/27. For more info, contact email@example.com
A Message from TEP (TOPANGA ENRICHMENT PROGRAMS):
As we tackle our annual goal of raising $302,605 to cover the costs of teacher’s aides, our dedicated science teacher/lab, technology instruction (PlanetBravo), physical education program (YMCA), our dedicated art teacher/art room and our class-room size reduction teacher and more—all of this is above and beyond what is provided by LAUSD--we pledge to keep you informed of our progress. We are all in this together! We are grateful to those families who made donations at Prep & Polish—and pleased to report that we received nearly $21,000 in your support at that event. That’s 6% to our goal for the year, so our work has just begun. Our goal is 50% of our budget raised in the first 50 days of school - so let’s see what we can do together to make it happen!
The suggested donation is $1,200 per child for the year. You can pay in one lump sum, and get yourself an adult-sized t-shirt as a perk. Or, you can space it out with our monthly recurring payment options--or simply pay by check as you go (made out to ‘TOPANGA ENRICHMENT PROGRAMS’ and either given to the school office, or mailed to our P.O. Box 801, Topanga, CA 90290), or click on over to: https://www.topangaelementary.org/donate.html to join the community in supporting our children. And check to see if your employer has a matching grant program…many, many companies offer this, including Google, Apple, Warner Media and more—this is a great way to double your personal impact for not a lot of extra effort.
Donations are not mandatory, but are also not something we can do without. We recognize that everyone’s situation is different—so if the recommended amount won’t work for your family, please give what is meaningful to you.
Thank you for your support - we’ll keep you updated with fund-raising progress as we go!
