Fri Aug 24 Science Committee meeting – 2:45 pm in the lab
Tue Aug 28 Back to School Night 6:00 – 7:30 p.m.
Tue Aug 28 Voting for Leadership Council Parent Representatives
Fri Aug 31 Admissions Day – No School
Mon Sept 3 Labor Day – No School
Thank to everyone for a great first two weeks of school! This week our science enrichment class and new P.E. program with the YMCA began – with more enrichment to come.
After this morning’s assembly, we had a well-attended Volunteer Training in Room 14. A few parents were disappointed because they could not attend today, but not to worry – more trainings are coming. On Friday September 7th and Friday September 21st we’ll do it again, so that anyone who wants to be a volunteer here at Topanga Elementary Charter will have the opportunity to serve.
I hope to see everyone Tuesday evening for Back-to-School Night. Unlike Open House, this is an adult event – so try to find coverage for your kids for the night. There will be two classroom presentations (at 6:00 pm and 7:00pm) so you can visit two classrooms if you have more than one student here, and we will have announcements at 6:30pm in the quad area in front of the office. The entire event runs from 6:00pm to 7:30pm. See you then!
Leadership Council at Topanga Elementary Charter
The Leadership Council is the decision-making body at Topanga Elementary. As outlined in our charter, the council is composed of ten representatives: five teachers, three parents, one classified staff member and one administrator. The parent representatives are elected for a two year term, and this year we are voting to fill the one open position (the other two representatives are serving the second of their two year terms).
Only two candidates have come forward – so there’s room for more (but not after Monday because I have to print up the ballots).
The ballots will be available, one per family, at Back to School Night. One of the candidates will join the other two to be our parent representatives, and the runner-up will be an alternate. Thank you all for giving your time to our school.
STAR for NOVA Session 1 has begun! Classes begin September 4.
This session we are offering Kinder Rock and Rockstar
Magic is on hold.

Surveys to parents will be sent out next Friday for Nova Session 2 requests.

Notes from VAPA
Art Trek is almost here! Sign up sheets are in classrooms now for all who are interested in volunteering for this program. Our first training will be on September 18 from 8:15am - 10:45am in our new Art room. If you have any questions, feel free to email Tracy Murphy at email@example.com
VAPA is excited to welcome parents this Tuesday evening for Back to School Night. Please stop by our table to find out more about what we have planned for the year. We will be looking for volunteers for things like art lunch club and the talent show. We will also be putting together a team to work on our new art room! Hope to see you all then.
The Science Committee
The science committee had their first meeting in the science lab after school today, but the next meeting will be held in the evening to accommodate working parents. All are welcome! They will also have two telescopes for stargazing at the Fiddle and Griddle event on September 1 at the TCC.
