After this morning’s assembly, we had a well-attended Volunteer Training in Room 8. A few parents were disappointed because they could not attend today, but not to worry – more trainings are coming. On Friday September 9th and Friday September 23rd we’ll do it again, so that anyone who wants to be a volunteer here at Topanga Elementary Charter will have the opportunity to serve.
Parents of our Kinder and 1st graders – we need your help! After school I’m usually out front with the cars, or meeting with teachers and parents – but I’m concerned about our lower garden area (in front of Rooms 1 through 4) after school. We have families picking up students and then allowing their children (and sometimes younger siblings) to run around on the outdoor stage and our garden planters. Not only are we seeing damage to the stage and gardens – but I worry because there are rocks and cement benches and other unforgiving surfaces that could cause injury to our littlest ones. So, if you are in the lower garden area after school – please help us by supervising all of your children in the lower gardens. Help us keep them safe and sound.
The main office is here to take your calls regarding your child’s attendance, health, or any other concerns. Sometimes, however, parents call so we can give students information that is not urgent (such as news about an afterschool play date). While we will try to deliver all messages, please understand that if it’s not urgent, we can’t be certain your child will receive the message in a timely manner. It’s still just Joanna in the office (we are still looking for a second office worker), so we are trying to prioritize our calls and notes sent to classrooms during the day.
Leadership Council at Topanga Elementary Charter
The Leadership Council is the decision making body at Topanga Elementary. As outlined in our charter, the council is composed of ten representatives: five teachers, three parents, one classified staff member and one administrator. The parent representatives are elected for a two year term, and this is the year we will elect three new parent representatives.
Here are the candidates who have thrown their hat into the ring:
Back to School Movie Night - Zootopia
Tomorrow night (Saturday, August 27th), TEP is hosting Movie Night here in the Topanga Elementary auditorium. Doors will open at 5:30 for seating and eating (it’ll be floor seating – so bring your own blanket or floor pillows) and the film will screen at 6:00 pm. It’ll be a fun event for the whole family, and 100% of the proceeds (food, drinks and suggested donation) will go to TEP to pay for all the extras our school gives our students.
Environmental Science Training for Parents
It’s not just for helping out at school – it’s a great orientation for anyone interested in environmental science.
On Tuesday, September 20 at Topanga State Park, 10-12:30pm, there will be a Program Orientation. Learn about environmental education from those in the business. Meet dept. educators while enjoying refreshments and hearing about what we do.
All interested parties welcome.
RSVP by Tue Sep 13 to Stephen Vodantis, Education Supervisor: firstname.lastname@example.org
Pledge forms went out this week for Coyote Run, to be held on Thursday, September 15th. Get your pledges done by Wed. Sept 14th. We will keep track of your laps, and you will then be able to collect pledges and turn them back in to school with your pledge form by September 23rd. Challenge your friends and surprise yourself by finding out how many laps you can do! We have a school wide goal of 4500 laps - that’s only 15 laps a student!
