I hope everyone is enjoying their summer. We opened the office a little over a week ago, and there’s no shortage of things to do: enroll new students, draft new schedules, distribute new textbooks, and get everything as ready as possible for Prep and Polish Day, two weeks from today.
I hope to have most or all of our teachers here on that day so your child can meet their new teacher and you can help them prepare the classroom for the first day of school. Normally we have outdoor projects to finish as well, but we have been fortunate this week to have a team of tree trimmers doing major work on our trees and other assorted vegetation (they even got up on part of the hiking trails!). Even though we lost some precious shade, the campus looks great and, most important of all, lots of dead wood and brush was cleared, which will significantly lower our risk of wildfires.
Thanks to the efforts of our hiring committee (made up of teachers, parents, and other staff members) we have found three terrific teachers for the coming year. At Back to School Night (which is on August 30th – the third week of school) I will be able to introduce them in person. In grade level order, they are Julie Tobisman (2nd Grade), Moira Talan (4th Grade) and Reale Santora (5th Grade). They are all highly experienced and knowledgeable teachers, and they are just as excited to be joining us as we are to be welcoming them.
We have also filled two important positions that are funded by YOU – our new science teacher and P.E. coach, who are here because of your donations to TEP. This year Rena Benor, who has a strong background in life sciences and environmental studies, will be heading our ever-evolving science enrichment program, and Sean Claude Terrell, who has coached varsity basketball and served as a fitness trainer, will serve as our new P.E. Coach.
In addition to our new staff members, we have a new TEP board, and on Back to School Night (August 30th) we will be voting for three new parents representative for our school’s Leadership Council. There will be an explanation of the duties for those who serve on Leadership Council in the opening packets, as well as many other opportunists for parents to get involved in our school. I’ve already met with parents who wanted to meet our new science teacher and plan ways they can support the program, and I’m impressed by the energy and determination that our parents are bringing to Topanga Elementary Charter!
Prep and Polish Day:
Our first big school event of the new year is our traditional “Prep and Polish Day,” which is held on the Friday before the first week of school from 9:00 – 11:00 am. While the first day of school for our students is Tuesday, August 16, on Friday students and families who come on Friday can help us get the school clean and ready, find out their new class assignments, and have a chance to sign up and get involved with our school through the many opportunities offered for parents to volunteer.
