We wanted to share some good news with you all. The science committee applied and was just awarded a grant from the Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation for TECS to support monarch butterfly habitat building in California! It is not a monetary award, but it provides a habitat kit of plants we hope to integrate into our three existing native habitat gardens (butterfly hillside garden, Girl Scouts native garden, and 5th grade legacy project native restoration site) as well as the field within our five acres of oak woodlands. We believe this grant further distinguishes our school as a leader in environmental conservation and stewardship.
In addition to thanking Michael Heard for his work putting Track and Field Day together, I was reminded that his wife Haco did as much (if not more) to make the event a success. She also did a fantastic job writing a facilities grant for our school, which we should learn more about in the weeks to come.
