Traffic Duty for the Week: Ms. Santora’s Class
Thanks to all the families who attended, and the folks who helped me make announcements, at Tuesday’s Back to School Night. I enjoyed hearing the presentations in each of the classrooms, and I could feel the positive energy as we move past the first weeks of school and into September.
Good attendance is a priority this year – but if your child is sick, keep them at home so they can get better and not share whatever they have with their friends.
Leadership Council at Topanga Elementary Charter
Voting for the one open parent representative position took place during Back to School Night. We had only two candidates on the ballot this time for the one open position, which means that the candidate who received the most votes will serve this year as our parent representatives, along with Michelle Butler and Summer Scott-Sexton, the other two representatives serving their second terms.
Congratulations to Andrea Shreeman who received enough votes to be given the position of third parent representative on the leadership council. Congratulations as well to Jessica Dirschel, who will be serving as parent representative alternate along with Jesse Welch, who served on leadership last year. Thank you all for volunteering your time for this important function of our school!
Our newly elected representatives will join me, our teacher representatives and a representative from our classified staff for our first council meeting on Tuesday, September 11 at 1:45 pm. We have a box in the office for suggestions for the leadership agenda, and we will allow five minutes at the beginning of each meeting for public comments.
Separating School and Work
For some of us, school is work, but most of our parents have jobs outside of the education field. As you get acquainted with your child’s class, you may be invited to be part of an email chain regarding assignments and events for the classroom. Please do not take advantage of this list of email to solicit business from other parents. There is a time and a place for advertising and using classroom email lists is not the appropriate place for ads. Thanks!
A parent noticed that the section of our new Parent/Student Handbook on homework referenced a District bulletin that was not the most recent on the subject. Rather than Bul-3491.0 (from 2007), we have made a change in the handbook to utilize Bul-3491.1 (updated in 2015). The biggest change in recommended minutes are for the lower grades (the upper grades minutes didn't change too much), and that the recommendation is for a maximum number of routine daily homework minutes per day. Here is the updated list from the District of maximum routine daily homework minutes by grade:
Kinder, a maximum of 10mins – 1st grade, 20 mins – 2nd grade, 20 mins – 3rd grade, 30 mins – 4th grade, 40 mins and 5th grade, a maximum of 50 minutes.
