The birth of cool jazz and the long Presidents’ Day weekend were the subjects of this morning’s Black History presentation. While we honor the birthdays of George Washington and Abraham Lincoln this weekend, we can also remember “Prez” (the nickname that jazz singer Billie Holiday gave to Lester Young), the first cool tenor player. Enjoy the three day weekend and we look forward to seeing everyone back on Tuesday, February 20th.
Thanks to all the parents who helped with our annual Jump Rope for Heart event – everyone had fun, and we’ve raised $2,640 (so far) for the American Heart Association! All envelopes are due by next Friday, 2/23 or online at http://american.heart.org/jump-hoops - also by Friday the 23rd.
In the last couple of days I’ve had some very productive discussions (and email exchanges) with parents and teachers regarding our shared concern to make our campus as safe and secure as possible. Today I received word that construction of a new gate next to Room 14 will finally begin next week! We will continue to talk about ways to improve the security of our school, but for now here are a few reminders:
Everyone entering campus must come to the office first to sign in and receive a visitor badge.
If your child has forgotten their lunch, snack or homework, bring it to the office and we will make sure they get it.
If you see anyone on campus who you don’t know and does not have a visitor’s badge, ask them who they are. We have district workers on campus all the time (plumbers, electricians, carpenters), but if you don’t see their badge – ask! They won’t mind at all.

3:00 - 6:00 PM
The Annual Topanga Elementary Art Show launches on Tuesday, February 20th. This year, it’s all about celebrating the unique themes of each classroom. Families are encouraged to visit the gallery at their leisure this week--or join us at the reception on Saturday afternoon*--to see the artwork on display.
To support our school's thriving arts program, we are proud to be able to offer art work generously donated by artists who are members of the Topanga parent community in a Silent Auction. Please Visit the Topanga Canyon Gallery to place your bid throughout the week. Winning bidders will be contacted the week after the auction by Mo Whelan, parent organizer.
To preview the artwork available for bid, please check out the link below!
*If attending the reception, please be prepared to keep tabs on your kid(s). There is a lot of weekend traffic in the parking lot and we want to prioritize safety, so that everyone can have a good time!
